Micah Altman's Guide to Obtaining Research Funding in the Social Sciences

This is a page of funding resources to accompany my short course on research funding:

Getting Started, Getting Funded [exercises]

[Updated 11/20/2009]

Increasingly, conducting innovative research requires resources that exceed those readily on-hand to the individual scholar. You can use research funding to access a wider set of research methods, to accelerate your research project, expand its scope and depth, and increase its impact. This short course provides an overview of the types and sources of funding available for research support, and introduces the fundamental elements of planning, proposal writing, and management for "sponsored" projects. The course is geared toward junior faculty, postdocs, and graduate students (in late stages or on the job market), who are new to the funding process, are considering whether to seek funding from new sources, or who would like a systematic review of the grant writing and review process.

You may also be interested in this accompanying short article on how to write a proposal.

Use these collections of resources to help you in your search for funders and funding opportunities:

And follow these four steps...

  1. Develop an original idea for a research project that solves some part of an important problem

(Even better if the idea or its implementation is clever.)

  2. Do your homework and target funders who are interested in that problem
  3. State the problem clearly for the reviewers:
    • Why it is important
    • How it is timely
    • What you intend to do
    • How you know that you can carry it out
    • Why you chose to do that
  4. Be persistent, meticulous and systematic in writing submission and review

Special Programs for Early Career Investigators

NIH Independent Scientist Awards

The Independent Scientist Award provides up to five years of salarysupport for newly independent scientists who can demonstrate the need for a period of intensive research focus as a means of enhancing their research careers. This award is intended to foster the development of outstanding scientists and enable them to expand their potential to make significant contributions to their field of research.

NIH FIRST Awards The purpose of the FIRST award is to provide a sufficient period of research support for newly independent, biomedical and behavioral science investigators to initiate their own research and demonstrate the merit of their own research ideas. These grants underwrite the first independent investigative efforts, provide a reasonable opportunity to demonstrate creativity, productivity, and promise for an independent research career and for the principle investigator (PI) help in the transition to traditional types of NIH research project grants.

NSF Career/PECase Awards

The Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program is a Foundation-wide activity that offers the National Science Foundation's most prestigious awards in support of junior faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars through outstanding research, excellent education and the integration of education and research within the context of the mission of their organizations.
Sloan Research Fellowships The Sloan Research Fellowships were established in 1955 to provide support and recognition to scientists, often in their first appointments to university faculties, who were endeavoring to set up laboratories and establish their independent research projects with little or no outside support. Financial assistance at this crucial point, even in modest amounts, often pays handsome dividends later to society.
